To feed Raw or not to feed Raw

Have you wondered about the benefits of feeding a raw diet to your dogs or cats. In this blog we look at the benefits and (although small) the risks:

  • Shinier coat and healthier skin: Raw diets are high in moisture and contain essential fatty acids, which can help to improve the condition of your pet's coat and skin.
  • Improved dental health: Raw bones help to clean your pet's teeth and gums, which can help to prevent tartar build up and gum disease.
  • Boosted immune system: Raw diets provide your pet with a natural source of probiotics, which can help to support a healthy immune system.
  • Reduced allergies and intolerances: Raw diets can help to reduce allergies and intolerances in some pets.
  • More energy: Raw diets can help to give your pet more energy and improve their overall stamina.
  • Smaller stools: Raw diets are more easily digested than processed foods, which can lead to smaller, less smelly stools.

It is important to note that there is some controversy surrounding the safety of raw feeding. Some studies have shown that raw diets can increase the risk of foodborne illness in both pets and humans. However, other studies have shown that raw diets can be safe when prepared and handled properly. As always when dealing with raw meat there are certain precautions you should take i.e. washing hands after handling, cleaning down all surfaces thoroughly.

If you are considering feeding your pet a raw diet, it is important to do your research, we recommend commercially produced raw food. You can normally be confident that the mix of meat, veg and bone is correct

Here are some additional tips for feeding raw to dogs and cats:

  • Start slowly and gradually transition your pet to a raw diet over a period of 2-4 weeks.
  • Choose a reputable raw food supplier that sources its meat from high-quality sources.
  • Make sure to freeze raw meat for at least 7 days before feeding it to your pet. This will help to kill any harmful bacteria.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat or bones.
  • Store raw food properly in a cool, dark place.

If you have any concerns about feeding your pet a raw diet, please speak to someone you know who already feeds raw alternatively join a fb group.
